Prompt Engineering Guide: How to Write AI Prompts That Work

A good prompt names the subject, the action, the setting, the look and the deliverable. Put the non-negotiable details first; then change one variable at a time when the result misses the brief.

How to Build a Useful Prompt

Name the subject, visible action, setting, visual treatment and output. Put the decision-making details first: which object must stay recognizable, what motion must happen and what the final frame should show. Test one version, then change the single instruction connected to the clearest mismatch.

The 5-Part Prompt Formula

The five parts are (1) subject, (2) action, (3) environment, (4) visual treatment, and (5) deliverable. Put the subject and action first. The example below specifies a still-image deliverable, so it does not need a motion instruction.

Prompt 1.

Prompt text
Create an editorial photo of a glass water bottle against a warm gray wall, three-quarter view, soft side light, label fully legible, with empty space on the left for copy.

Iterating: How to Fix a Bad Result

If a bottle label is unreadable, keep the approved composition and replace only the label instruction: “Use the supplied label artwork; leave the label area clear for the approved asset if accurate lettering cannot be preserved.” Compare only label accuracy in the next preview. If the object changes shape, simplify the motion; if the message is lost, move the product closer and reduce competing elements.

Try It Now in Pexo

Turn the five-part brief into a real project by naming the subject, asset references and final use. Bring the brief and any source assets you own to Pexo. Review the preview and request one concrete revision. If you want to turn the brief into video, Pexo’s Seedance 2.5 page lists a free first video after account registration; check the current offer and credit conditions before rendering.

Prompt Engineering FAQ

Should I name a model in every prompt?

No. Describe the visual goal first. Model-specific controls depend on the tool and version available to you.

Which part of a weak prompt should I revise first?

Change the detail that caused the clearest mismatch: subject, action, setting, look or deliverable. Keep the other parts steady so you can judge the revision.
